Helen Carey

Agent: Anne Williams

Helen Carey is the author of the popular LAVENDER ROAD novels which, one year at a time, follow the lives of a number of characters living in one South London street throughout the Second World War. Originally published by Orion in the 1990s, they were reissued by Helen as eBooks in 2013, garnering over 300 five-star reviews and countless letters pleading for the next in the series.

Following the success of the eBooks, Helen decided to continue the series and her long-awaited new novel, LONDON CALLING, was published in hardback, eBook and paperback by Headline in 2016.  It was shortlisted earlier this year by the Romantic Novelists’ Association for Romantic Novel of the Year Award in the Historical Novel category.  The next novel in the series, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET, already available in hardback and eBook, will be published in paperback in November by Headline. The last book in the sequence, VICTORY GIRLS, set in the final year of the War will be published by Headline in 2018. Headline have also reissued the earlier books in the series, LAVENDER ROAD, SOME SUNNY DAY and ON A WING AND A PRAYER.

With their vivid portrayal of life both on the Home Front and in the world beyond, the LAVENDER ROAD novels depict courage, grit and defiant laughter as friends and neighbours, men and women, rich and poor face up to the trials and traumas of war.

Praise for the LAVENDER ROAD novels:

  • “Sparkling storytelling” London Evening Standard
  • “Unputdownable” Western Telegraph
  • “Helen’s LAVENDER ROAD novels are written with a lightness of touch, an emotional integrity and an historical accuracy which has brought her respect from critics and readers alike by making this period of history accessible to large audiences worldwide” Louis de Bernieres

Having lived much of her life in south London, Helen now lives in Pembrokeshire, with her husband and their lurcher, in an idyllic spot tucked under Carn Ingli (Mound of Angels), the last peak of the Preseli Mountains, overlooking Cardigan Bay. The views are so spectacular she has to close her curtains to be able to work.
